What is the Spanish Boat Licence?
This 4-hour practical course for the Spanish Boat Licence gives you the basic skills you need to legally drive a powerboat of up to 6 metres waterline length (LWL) in Spain. The course provides a practical introduction to boat handling, safety equipment and preparing the boat and crew to go out on the water.
The course lasts 4 hours on the water with an additional 2 hours study online. During July and August, we run this course three times a week, with pick up in either Denia (El Portet) or Javea (Nou Fontana). The Boat School course to obtain the the Spanish Boat Licence is taught in small groups.
Is this course for me?
This course is suitable for beginners and for drivers with experience who are looking for formal certification to operate a Spanish-flagged pleasure craft in Spain.
The Spanish Boat Licence is valid for driving:
– Motor boats up to 6 meters overall length (LOA)
– Jetskis / Personal Watercraft (PWC) all sizes
– During daylight hours
– Up to 2 nautical miles from a port, marina or safe haven
Open to all nationalities
You don’t have to be a Spanish citizen or resident to obtain the Spanish Boat Licence.
You can drive either your own boat or a rented boat with this licence.

How do I make a reservation?
Book a place in an open group
With an open group booking, you book a place on a course and we’ll admit up to a maximum of five students onto that same course (depending on boat size). The price of a seat on an open course includes fuel and mooring fees away from our base.
We need three people booked onto a course before we can confirm your reservation.
What’s included
Your Spanish Boat Licence course with The Boat School includes:
- Use of light-weight inflatable life jackets
- Cold water on the boat
- Fuel and mooring fees
- Spanish Boat Licence certificate
- Between 10% and 20% discount on future rentals for selected boats
What’s not included
- Meals are not included
- Medical certificate (budget between 30€ and €40 per person)
Booking a Level 1 Powerboat License Course with the Boat School is straightforward. Follow these simple steps:
1. Choose a Date: Start by selecting your preferred course date from the available options. Once you pick a date, the price for that specific session will be displayed.
2. Select Number of Participants: Indicate the number of participants who will be attending the course.
3. Complete Participant Forms: Fill out a form for each participant. You’ll need to provide essential details such as passport number (or other national ID number), date of birth, and nationality for everyone. These details are crucial as they will be used to create the actual licenses after the course. Ensure that there are no errors in this information to avoid any complications with the licenses.
4. Include Organizer Details: As the course organizer, you’ll also need to provide your details. Note that you don’t necessarily have to be a participant in the course, but your information is still required for organizational purposes.

We run open groups on a regular basis during the whole year. We run at least 2 courses every month in the low and mid seasons. We run several courses every month during July and August. During the seummer months, we run courses from both Denia and Jávea.

Can I have a private course?
In addition to booking a seat on an open course, you can also do the course with family and friends. You can have this “whole boat booking” for a private group of family and friends or even just for yourself!
Please contact us for whole boat bookings. We can arrange dates and times to fit in with your plans. We also have larger boats available for whole boat bookings.
Passengers
The rules under which we operate don’t allow “passengers” on the course; everyone on the course needs to participate!
Boats used in training for this kind of course have to be registered with the Spanish Maritime Authority. For this reason, we can’t offer own boat tuition for Boat Licence courses.
Requirements
This course is suitable for beginners and for drivers with experience who are looking for formal certification to operate a Spanish-flagged pleasure craft in Spain.
The minimum age for this course is 16. Candidates under the age of 18 will need a consent form signed by a parent or guardian.
You will need a medical certificate before we can issue you with your Spanish Boating Licence. For the Spanish Boating Licence, you’ll need a simple medical check up and a medical certificate issued by a driver’s medical centre. The check up is done in English, takes 15 minutes and costs about 30€. You can do the check up on the day of your course.

Recognition in Spain
The Spanish Boat Licence is valid for driving:
- Spanish-flagged vessels up to 6 meters waterline length (LWL)
- Jetskis of any size
During daylight hours
Up to 2 nautical miles from a port, marina or safe haven
Open to all nationalities. You don’t have to be a Spanish citizen or resident to obtain the Spanish Boat Licence. You can drive either your own boat or a rented boat with the Boat Licence.
Assuming you have a medical certificate, we’ll issue your Licence as soon as you finish the course.
International recognition
The Spanish Boating Licence isn’t formally recognized outside of Spain. If you need international recognition, we suggest you look at the RYA Powerboat level 2 course. For many nationalities, the RYA will issue you with an ICC on the basis of your Powerboat level 2 certificate.
Training boats we use for Spanish Boat Licence courses
We have a number of different vessels in our fleet that have been specifically chosen and equipped for teaching powerboat courses, including:

Fifty 5
a Zodiac Open 5.5 RIB (rigid inflatable boat)
If you book a place on an open course, the boat we’ll use for training will depend on the number of students on the course and on the weather conditions.
If you choose a course/rental pack, you can choose the boat. In this case, the price of the course will depend on the boat you select. You should note that not all our vessels are available in the low and mid seasons.
You can rent “Fifty 5” with the Spanish Boat Licence. You can even choose to do a course in the morning and rent the boat in the afternoon.
